MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!
FRAMERS, a bespoke framing company in Quicks Road, Wimbledon, currently have on display an original film poster for the very first film from nearly 40 years ago in 1977.
“The original quad from the first release is now extremely rare”, explains Mark Barrow of Picture Palace Movie Posters (www.picturepalacemovieposters.co.uk). “This design, sporting probably the most iconic artwork of the whole series was created by movie poster supremo Tom Chantrell (1916-2001) and the first run was printed in limited numbers. When Star Wars won a raft of Oscars, the initial release poster was pulled and replaced with one listing the awards, which was printed in far greater quantities, making the pre-oscar version one of the holy grails for poster collectors.”
FRAMERS, run by Jonathan Gooders, specialise in framing all sorts of weird and wonderful objects, including many rare and delicate posters. “As we’re a bespoke conservation framers, we’re used to handling valuable items, and because we only use archival materials and museum quality techniques as standard, our clients are confident their precious collectibles will be handled with great care”, says Jonathan. “It’s been a great pleasure framing the Star Wars quad, especially as they are now so rare, and it’s caused a bit of a stir since we hung it in our window. People stop and even have their photograph taken standing in front of it!”
